Data:  NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis Atmospheric Monthly Temperature and Reynolds and Smith Version 2 monthly SST anomalies.
Data Period:  December 1981 - present

SST Climatological Base Period:  January 1971 - December 2000
Data Source:  NCEP

Description:   Top figure:  Standardized tropospheric temperature anomaly, averaged over 25°S to 25°N and from 850 hPa to 200 hPa, with a 3-month running average applied (in blue); and 3-month running average of standardized Niño 3.4 SST anomaly (in red). The climatological base period for atmospheric temperature is 1979-2003, and the base period for SST is 1971-2000.

Middle figure:  Monthly tropospheric temperature anomaly, averaged over 25°S to 25°N. Warm (cool) tones indicate positive (negative) temperature anomalies from the 1979-2003 mean. The contour interval is 0.5°.C.

Bottom figure:  Monthly tropospheric temperature anomaly over the tropics, averaged vertically from 850 to 200 hpa. Warm (cool) tones indicate positive (negative) temperature anomalies from the 1979-2003 mean. The contour interval is 0.5°.C.

NCEP is an acronym for the US National Centers for Environmental Prediction.
